Als (kunst)schilder krijgt ik automatisch auteursrecht op mijn  schilderijen, tekeningen en andere werken. Dit houdt onder andere in dat alleen ik beslis wat er met mijn  werk mag gebeuren. Als ik anderen daarvoor toestemming geeft, mag mijn  werk tentoongesteld of afgebeeld worden in bijvoorbeeld boeken, op posters en ansichtkaarten 

websites of in een agenda.
er zijn   aan deze toestemming voorwaarden verbonden, bijvoorbeeld de plaats van de tentoonstelling of de oplage van het boek. En ik kan er een bepaalde, door mijzelf en de andere partij overeen te komen, financiële vergoeding voor vragen.

Ik behoudt altijd de persoonlijkheidsrecht op mijn werken. Dit houdt onder andere in dat ik bezwaar zal maken als anderen mijn werk verminken of aantasten, het een andere naam geven of er de naam van iemand anders (die van henzelf bijvoorbeeld) bij zetten.

De bedoeling van het auteursrecht is dat auteurs, en dus ook kunstschilders, in staat zijn hun creaties commercieel te (laten) exploiteren en dat anderen niet zonder toestemming aan hun geestelijk eigendom kunnen komen.
